This cartoon depicting a family playing jazz music was a cartoon drawn about the Axeman of New Orleans. The Axeman of New Orleans was an active serial killer in 1918 and 1919. This killer mainly killed italian immigrants leading some to belive these crimes were racially motivated. In a letter to the police the Axeman warned that he would not kill those whose homes played jazz music on the night of March 13, 1919. True to his word he didn’t kill anyone that night for everyone was at dance halls where jazz played all through the night. There was even a song written about him called “Don’t scare me papa” sometimes called “The Axeman’s jazz”. This Killer was never caught or identified though some believe it was a jazz musician who had lost their job and was taking vengeance.
